our micro, small and medium blacksmith firms (SMEs) from Ngingas village in East Java have received the biggest purchasing order (PO) in history of 200,000 spare motorbike parts from PT Rachmat Perdana Adhimetal, a vendor for giant manufacturer PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM).

The four SMEs -- PT Elang Jagad, UD Karya Jaya, UD KS Pro and UD Borneo Putram -- have partnered with the major motorbike maker in recent years and have received training from AHM’s foundation Yayasan Dharma Bakti Astra (YDBA).

Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto lauded the partnership as part of an example of good cooperation between the big and small firms and urged more small firms to partake in YDBA training to upgrade their businesses.

“By joining the partnership, small manufacturers can maintain quality raw materials for machinery and tools as well as workers’ productivity,” he said during work visit on Monday.

There are about 300 blacksmiths in the village, however, YDBA’s high standards makes it hard for them to join, said Ngingas cooperative treasurer Syamsul Anam.

The people in Ngingas have been making spare parts for various industries: automotive, electronics, farming and home appliances, like stoves, since the 1930s. (bbn)
