ndustry Minister Airlangga Hartarto visited gold jewelry maker PT Untung Bersama Sejahtera (UBS) in Surabaya, East Java, on Monday to learn more about the industry so that his ministry would be able to create a policy to support the export jewelry sector.

"The purpose of this visit is to get input about the development of the jewelry sector in the country so we can give proper guidance," he said in a press statement issued on Monday.

UBS is a 36-year-old family business, a former small scale firm (CV) that registered itself as a bigger form or PT in 1991.

Airlangga was glad UBS shared information about its success during the visit so the ministry could do more training for thousands of jewelry makers in the province.

Jewelry has traditionally been one of Indonesia's biggest export commodities.

Last year, East Java contributed to 54.08 percent or US$3.44 billion of $6.36 billion national jewelry exports. The commodity was the fourth biggest export, Central Statistics Agency data shows.

The province has 26 big and medium jewelry making firms and about 1,854 small scale firms, employing 17,600 people in Surabaya, Mojokerto, Gresik, Lamongan, Pasuruan, Lumajang and Pacitan. (bbn)
