T

housands of angkot (public minivan) drivers in Depok, West Java, plan to stage a rally at the city hall next week against the introduction of app-based public transportation in the region.

As many as 6,000 drivers, incorporated in the Depok Transportation Communication Forum (FKAKD), plan to go on strike on March 29. They submitted a notification letter to Depok Police last Tuesday.

FKKAD leader Maryono said the rally was further action after talks with the Depok administration conducted last Thursday did not achieve common ground or clarity on the rules for the app-based public transportation.

“The aim of our action is to improve the rules on ride-hailing app-based transportation in Depok,” Maryono said Thursday, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

Depok Police spokesperson Adj. Comr. Firdaus said the police had received an official letter from the forum in relation to the rally. He gave an assurance that the police would secure the rally to prevent any trouble.

“We will also take action against people who engage in violence or threatening behavior,” Firdaus said, adding that the police would confirm the number of participants in the rally, the location and the rally’s route.

The police, along with the Depok administration, will also deploy operational cars to accommodate stranded passengers affected by the planned rally, he added. (wnd)
