tate-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom Indonesia (Telkom) is currently migrating its services from the troubled Telkom 1 satellite to other satellites, including Telkom 2 and Telkom 3S.
Telkom 1 has 63 customers, eight of which are VSAT providers that serve the banking sector, Telkom president director Alex Janangkih Sinaga said in Jakarta on Monday.
The VSAT providers have 15,000 sites such as ATM and EDC machines.
"We are sparing no expense to restore services and apologize to our customers and the customers of our customers," Alex said during a press conference.
Telkom 1 services went off line on Friday at 4:51 p.m. Jakarta time. The services of a number banks such as Bank Central Asia (BCA) and Bank Mandiri have been affected as they use Telkom 1 VSAT connection for their ATM and EDC machines.
Telkom began the migration on Saturday and expects to finish the process by Sept. 10. Telkom will also rent foreign-owned satellites to cover the services because Telkom 2 and Telkom 3S can only cover 77 percent of Telkom 1's services.
"We will use foreign satellites with ASEAN coverage, such as the satellites from Hong Kong and China, to cover the remaining 23 percent," he added.
As of 11:30 a.m. on Monday, migration had reached 17 percent, Alex said, adding that Telkom and Lockheed Martin, the satellite manufacturer, were investigating what went wrong with the 18-year-old satellite. (bbn)
