T

he Denpasar Police have said they could not yet confirm whether or not a Japanese couple, found dead on Monday, were murdered although an external examination conducted by a forensic doctor team concluded that their deaths were unnatural.

“The investigation is still ongoing. We have searched the crime scene and will carry out further investigations based on the evidence we find,” the police’s general crime unit head Comr. Aris Purwanto told journalists on Tuesday.

Matsuba Nurio, 76, and his wife Matsuba Hiroko, 76, were found dead at their house at Puri Gading residential complex in Jimbaran, Bali, on Monday. Their bodies were found burned on the second floor of the two-story house.

The external examination was conducted on Tuesday after the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) team removed their bodies from the crime scene to Sanglah Hospital morgue.

Sanglah Medical Forensic Department head Dudut Rustiyadi said the forensic team had found many wounds on the couple’s bodies.

“On the male’s body, we found several open wounds, which appear to have been caused by sharp objects. There are circular cuts to the neck,” said Dudut, adding that many stab wounds were also found on the man's back.

Dudut said the team had found many wounds to the female's body that also appeared to have been caused by sharp objects. Plastic ropes were found on her neck and left hand.

“We need to conduct an autopsy to discover the cause of their deaths,” Dudut said. The team is waiting for approval from the victims’ family. (ebf)
