he Jakarta Police have dismissed three middle-ranking officers following allegations from two murder suspects that the officers accepted billions of rupiah to stop an investigation into their case.
Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Ade Ary Syam stated that the three officers were found guilty of "abusing their power" and breaching the police code of ethics in an ethics hearing held on Friday.
"Two other officers were demoted and barred from holding any position in a criminal investigation division for eight years in connection with the case," Ade said on Monday, as reported by Tribunnews.
Ade declined to provide further details on the nature of the abuse of power committed by the five officers but confirmed that all of them have decided to appeal the ethics committee's ruling.
The case first came to public attention last month when head of Indonesia Police Watch, Sugeng Teguh Santoso, told the press that two murder suspects had filed a civil lawsuit against the former head of the South Jakarta Police Criminal Investigation Department, Sr. Adj Comr. Bintoro.
Both suspects, identified only as AN and MBH, are demanding Bintoro return Rp 5 billion (US$309,000) that they allegedly paid him in exchange for closing the investigation into the death of a 16-year-old girl in South Jakarta in April last year.
The suspects allegedly hired the victim and another teenage girl for sexual services and gave both girls a beverage laced with a combination of narcotics inside a hotel room. The victim reportedly suffered a seizure after consuming the drink and died soon after.
