T

he Jakarta City Council proposed a 70 percent allowance increase for firefighters, having taken into account their risky work and round-the-clock shifts.

“Firefighting is very risky,” secretary to the council’s Commission A, which oversees financial issues, Syarif said on Sunday.

In addition to firefighters, Syarif also proposed that employees at the Jakarta Public Order Agency and investigators at Jakarta Inspectorate also receive special treatment because of their functions.

He said, however, that increasing the allowance of civil servants at the three agencies may result in the reduction of allowances at other agencies.

“If it is inevitable, we will have to accept that because there are some agencies who deserve special treatment,” Syarif said as quoted by kompas.com.

Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said previously that he would raise the allowance of Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency employees considering the risks associated with their job. (dis)
