In an attempt to kill Hamas negotiators to hasten victory in the Gaza war, Israel launched a strike on the Qatari capital Doha last Tuesday, escalating military tension in the Middle East. The attack has been widely condemned around the world and considered an act against the principles of international law and the norms of negotiation.
“Arrived in Doha [on Sunday] to attend the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit on behalf of President Prabowo [Subianto]. Indonesia stands in solidarity with Qatar and reaffirms its commitment to peace in the Middle East, including unwavering support for Palestinian independence,” Sugiono wrote on X on Monday.
All eyes are on Qatar this week as leaders from Arab and Muslim countries convene to reaffirm their solidarity with the recently-attacked nation, seeking to pile pressure on Tel Aviv whose military operation in the region has continued to ignite international outrage.
Hosted by Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the emergency meeting on Tuesday will “crystallize a unified position towards [Israeli] aggression” on Sept. 9, an unprecedented attack that "constitutes a threat to security and stability in the region”, according to a statement from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ahead of the summit.
A joint resolution is expected from the summit.
Reuters reported that a draft resolution for the emergency meeting will likely warn Israel that its attack on Qatar and other "hostile acts" threaten coexistence and efforts to establish diplomatic ties with countries in the region.
