Bus crash leaves eight people dead near Mt. Bromo

Authorities said the bus suffered a brake failure while descending a winding section of the road, causing it to hit a guardrail and collide with a passing motorcycle.

A

t least eight people were killed and dozens more injured on Sunday when a bus carrying hospital workers and their families crashed on a steep mountain road near Mount Bromo in East Java.

According to Probolinggo Traffic Police, the accident occurred at around 11:45 a.m. along Jl. Raya Bromo in Lumbang subdistrict, Probolinggo regency.

Authorities said the bus suffered a brake failure while descending a winding section of the road, causing it to hit a guardrail and collide with a passing motorcycle.

At the time of the crash, the bus was carrying 52 passengers returning from a vacation to Mt. Bromo, mostly family and staff from Bina Sehat Hospital in Jember, East Java. 

Eight passengers, including three children, died at the scene. The remaining passengers, along with the driver and assistant driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at hospitals in Probolinggo regency.
