he Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has kicked off railway electrification and track doubling projects for a new train route from Manggarai in Jakarta to Cikarang in West Java, called KRL Lintas Bekasi, which began operating on Sunday.
The track will be developed further for the TransJava railway, a joint project between the Indonesian and Japanese governments that connects two of Java’s busiest cities, Jakarta and Surabaya.
“The installment of a new signal system allows each train to travel six minutes after another, increasing frequency and transporting capacities,” JICA wrote in its press statement.
The kick-off ceremony for the electrification and track doubling endeavor — called the Java I project — took place on Saturday and was attended by Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, his officials, JICA and representatives of the Japan Embassy.
“We faced various difficulties at the start, but have made significant developments in the past two years,” Frederik Pongtuluran, a double-double track (DDT) official from the Jakarta and Banten Railway Task Force, said in the statement.
