alls have mounted for the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) to release its map of areas deemed vulnerable to electoral violence to assist authorities in anticipating potential violence during next year’s regional elections (Pilkada).
The latest call came from Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto, who said that he had told Bawaslu to “immediately finalize the Pilkada violence index.”
“Because we need to identify the nature of potential violence to help us minimize it,” Wiranto said on Monday, as quoted from kompas.com.
Bawaslu is currently analyzing the data it has gathered and will soon finalize the map on potential electoral violence ahead of the local elections next year in 171 regions across the country.
Wiranto identified one of the areas prone to election-related violence next year as Papua, the country’s easternmost province, which has seen several clashes related to local elections this year, mostly triggered by one group accusing another of engaging in vote-buying.
The Papua Police have also asked for extra personnel to beef up security in Papua during the Pilkada next year.
