resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has agreed to grant the founder of the Islamic Students Association (HMI), Lafran Pane, a national hero title for his contributions to the country.
“Alhamdulillah [Thank God], the President has said he will grant the title for Bapak Lafran Pane on Nov. 9,” HMI alumni association (KAHMI) presidium coordinator Mahfud MD said on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The HMI has long proposed to the President to grant Lafran the national hero title because Lafran had made many contributions throughout his life through his active roles in the HMI, especially during the HMI 10th Congress in Bogor in 1974, Mahmud said.
His contributions to the country have been widely acknowledged and validated by many universities, Mahmud added.
Lafran, who was born in Pagurabaan village in Sopirok subdistrict, North Sumatra, on Feb. 5, 1922, initiated the establishment of the HMI on Feb. 5, 1947, in Yogyakarta. The founder of the largest student association in the country passed away on Jan. 24, 1991.
