Putting it briefly: New venue needs Rp 10b for maintenance

Aquatic Stadium in Gelora Bung Karno complex (Antara/ Sigid Kurniawan)

The new Aquatic Stadium located in Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) in Senayan, South Jakarta, needs at least Rp 10 billion (US$740,000) per year for maintenance, according to an official at the sports complex.

The figure would also cover the costs of a water circulation pump, which keeps the swimming pools clear and safe to use, Gatot Tetuko, GBK director of business and development, said on Monday.

“We’re applying international standards for maintenance, because the old pool wasn’t treated very well due to the lack of a water circulation pump,” he added.

GBK uses its own funds to perform routine maintenance throughout the sporting complex, sourced from its various properties, including Plaza Senayan and Senayan City shopping malls, as well as from renting its sports venues.

The new Aquatic Stadium was first used on Tuesday — three days after its opening — for a 2018 Asian Games test event, the 2017 CIMB Niaga Indonesia Open Aquatic Championship, which will end on Dec. 15.

The event will be attended by more than 1,500 athletes from Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Aquatic Stadium will be ready for public use by February next year.
