A

candidate to fill the long-vacant post of Indonesian ambassador to the United States has been nominated to the House of Representatives, House Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed on Tuesday, signaling that an official announcement by the government is imminent.

Due to the strategic significance of the posting in Washington, the nominee must first undergo a fit-and-proper test before Commission I of the House, which oversees foreign affairs and defense, before receiving formal appointment, Sufmi explained.

“The candidate’s name has also been disclosed, but we’re now waiting for an official announcement from the government,” Sufmi said as quoted by Antara.

“Considering the high-profile nature of the role, several important qualifications must be assessed, which Commission I will examine during the vetting process,” he added.

Public anticipation for a new Indonesian ambassador in Washington has been growing in recent months, particularly amid significant political developments in the US that call for stronger diplomatic engagement.
