he Directorate General of Customs and Excise’s North Sumatra office foiled an attempt to smuggle 154,910 kilograms of illegal rattan worth over Rp 11 billion (US$755,909) to Singapore and China.
Office head Ova Olivia called the attempt the biggest yet, saying that officers managed to foil it after following up on a tip from locals about alleged rattan smuggling at Belawan Port, North Sumatra, on Dec. 14.
"Our officers also seized several documents, which stated the destinations -- Singapore and China. [The documents] also suggest that the containers were supposed to carry areca nuts,” Olivia said at the port on Thursday.
One person identified as AH has been named a suspect in the case.
