he Transportation Ministry has estimated that 22.83 million people will use public transportation to head back to their hometowns during this year’s Idul Fitri exodus.

The number is 4.14 percent higher than last year’s figure. The peak of travel usually falls seven days before and after Idul Fitri.

The ministry also projects that 10.61 million will use private vehicles during the long holiday -- 3.76 million cars and 6.85 million motorcycles.

It has been estimated that 6.45 million will travel by train, 5.78 million by plane, 4.68 million by bus and 5.61 million by ship.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stressed the importance of safety during the exodus.

“Ramp checks for all transportation modes must be carried out. For busses, ramp checks must be done independently by bus owners and by the Transportation Ministry and transportation agencies. Ramp checks for aircraft and evaluation of pilot performance must be conducted as well,” said Budi during a recent meeting with representatives of transportation stakeholders.

Budi also highlighted the importance of checking railway tracks to ensure the safety of travelers. He mentioned that a number of areas prone to landslides could disrupt travel and endanger travelers. (bbn)
