resident Prabowo Subianto is set to attend the BRICS leaders’ summit in Brazil this weekend, marking his debut at the gathering since the country became a member of the group this year, although Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping will be absent from the meeting.
The President departed for the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, after concluding his state visit to the Middle Eastern country, where he met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to talk about the haj and conflicts in the region, among other issues.
Prabowo is slated to attend the summit on July 6 and 7 after Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira extended an invitation to the President through his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in April. Brazil is this year’s chair of the economic bloc.
“After Saudi Arabia, the President will continue his trip by attending the BRICS summit in Brazil,” State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said after seeing off the President at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on Tuesday.
