A

n education advocacy group has lambasted the government for the abolishing the Early Childhood and Community Education Directorate General from the Education and Culture Ministry, arguing the move would abandon citizens who could not receive formal education.

Network for Education Watch Indonesia (JPPI) national coordinator Ubaid Matraji said the decision to scrap the directorate general was unjust, as not all citizens had access to schools.

“We’re advocating for providing education to the people who do not have access to schools. Learning should not be limited to formal education inside the classroom, but there should be places where people can learn,” he said.

He claimed the government was constantly ignoring informal education, as the funds allocated for community education in provincial budgets was below 1 percent.

A presidential decree signed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Dec. 16 was an additional blow, he said, as it abolished the aforementioned directorate general.

The decree dissolved the directorate general and moved its tasks to the Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Education Directorate General.

The decree also establishes a deputy minister post for the ministry, with the candidate to be appointed by the president and work under the minister.
