ndonesia will host another ulema conference to help bolster stability in Afghanistan, which just received a major boost as the United States and representatives of the Taliban movement signed a peace deal in Qatar on the weekend.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, who was in Kabul on Sunday, held meetings with President Ashraf Ghani and a number of Afghan government officials to convey Indonesia’s support for “sustainable peace” in the country.
The Taliban's political chief, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, signed on Saturday the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) with US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad aimed at ending the Afghan war, the hard-line Islamist group said in a statement on Sunday.
"The signing of the agreement between the US and the Taliban in Doha and the Joint Declarations of the Governments of Afghanistan and the United States will pave the way for sustainable peace in Afghanistan. It requires commitment from all parties to continue this initial step, in the interests of the people of Afghanistan, "Retno said in a statement after meeting with the Afghan president.
In 2018, Indonesia has hosted the Afghanistan-Indonesia-Pakistan Trilateral Ulema Meeting in Bogor.
"Insya Allah, this year we will also hold the Indonesia-Afghanistan Ulema Conference to strengthen the role of ulema in maintaining the sustainability of the peace process in Afghanistan," Retno said.
Ghani expressed great appreciation of Indonesia's commitment and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s attention in promoting peace in Afghanistan.
