t is right and just that Indonesia has joined the global condemnation of the Israeli airstrike in Doha, which, it was claimed, targeted senior Hamas leaders. The attack on Tuesday was a blatant breach of international law and a stumbling block to the ongoing efforts to end the violence that has claimed thousands of innocent lives in the past two years.
In a statement posted in its official X account, the Foreign Ministry called the attack “a grave violation of international law, including the UN Charter, a violation of Qatar's sovereignty, and a major threat to regional security and peace."
More than that, Indonesia expressed the fear that the attack would escalate and expand the conflict in the region, which is why it has requested the United Nations Security Council to take firm steps to stop Israel's actions and ensure accountability.
Indonesia, a constant champion of Palestine’s independence under the Two-State Solution, bears the responsibility to create a world order based on peace and justice as mandated by the Constitution. Beyond dropping humanitarian aid to Gaza, where people are enduring a food crisis, President Prabowo Subianto can advocate for a new peace initiative that emphasizes the need for a sovereign Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel at the upcoming UN General Assembly or other international forums he will attend in the coming few weeks.
Clearly the Israeli bombing in Doha, for whatever reason, is an attempt to derail peace efforts. According to a leading Hamas source, the strike targeted the group’s negotiating delegation who gathered to discuss United States President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the party Israel holds responsible for the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre on its home soil, which triggered the Gaza war.
Israel has repeatedly shown disrespect for the ceasefire by launching attacks in the devastated Gaza, apparently to force the population to relocate. Similarly, the food supply restriction that amounts to a hunger game is aimed at expelling the people of Gaza from their land.
Qatar, a US ally, has played a key role in negotiating ceasefires between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli strike has only taken a sledgehammer to this diplomacy, which will not only endanger ongoing negotiations, but also doom the chances of a lasting peace and the return of the remaining Israeli hostages. Furthermore, it raises doubts about the reliability of the US as a security partner in the region.
Instead of relying on external pressure from Washington or the international community to end Netanyahu’s resistance to peace, a change in leadership in Tel Aviv might offer a solution. However, hoping for such a political shift is unrealistic while the human cost in Gaza continues to rise.
