ubsidized Solar diesel is now available on Maratua Island, an island off the coast of Berau regency, East Kalimantan, with the opening of a fishermen fuel station (SPBUN), operated by PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Kalimantan region.
The fuel station’s presence is felt immediately, especially for fishermen. Residents on the island can now buy subsidized Solar diesel, at the official price of Rp 6,800 (41 US cents) per liter, that was 13,000 per liter at retailers before.
PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is the trading arm subsidiary of state-owned energy giant PT Pertamina.
“We used to buy Solar diesel in Tanjung Batu or even directly in Tanjung Redeb,” said Guntaris, a fisherman in Payung-payung village.
“It was quite far, and we must queue, but sometimes it was sold out. Now we can buy it here at a cheaper price.”
Tanjung Batu is a coastal district town in East Kalimantan, with a small port. The port is the gateway to the Derawan Islands, as well as Maratua Island.
It takes about two hours from Maratua Island to Tanjung Batu by speedboat in clear weather. If the wind is strong, the trip could take longer, which affects the price of fuel, including Solar, Pertalite and Pertamax.
