MYCL introduces sustainable, mushroom-derived Shrum Stool

M

ycotech Lab (MYCL), a biotechnology research company based in Bandung, West Java, recently launched its latest innovative product, the Shrüm Stool, in collaboration with ōd architecture studio in an event held at PITA Showroom SCBD.

Built with MYCL Composite, a biodegradable solid-composite material made of mushroom mycelium, the Shrüm Stool is a modular eco-friendly product that boasts an impressive weight capacity of up to 870 kg, while being only 3 kg itself, it is also carbon negative.

“The Shrüm Stool is a balance between strength and sustainable innovation. We've been working on this product since 2020, and it is an embodiment of conscious collaboration, research and design between ōd architecture studio and MYCL,” said Ghosa Muhammad, lead designer from ōd architecture studio.

Since its inception in 2012, MYCL has continuously innovated with mycelium, creating myriad products based on the mushroom fiber. Aside from the Shrüm Stool, MYCL has also created the synthetic leather-like material called Mylea, which is grown from mycelium substrate that utilizes agricultural waste, and has garnered global recognition including the Japanese Good Design Award in 2023. Mylea has been positively received by the fashion industry, being adopted by famous brands such as Hijack Sandals and Doublet, with the latter utilizing Mylea in its fall/winter collection during Paris Fashion Week 2023.

“Collaboration is in our blood, like mycelium itself, our identity is to network and connect structures to create strong bonds. So we want to open ourselves to invite creatives to use our material in new innovative ways,” explained Ronaldiaz Hartantyo, chief business development of MYCL.

PITA Showroom owner Alwi Sjaaf said he wanted the showroom to become a platform for Indonesian products that are made by Indonesian youth. “We need to celebrate companies like MYCL, because they are paving the way for a more sustainable future made by the next generation of Indonesians.”
