em>The Huntsman: Winter’s War not only serves as a prequel to 2012's dark fairy tale Snow White and the Huntsman, but also as a sequel as it tells the story of Snow White (Kristen Stewart) before and after she trounces her stepmother, Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron).

Interestingly, despite that the story still relates to Snow White, the only shot of her was when she's in front of the magic mirror and, even then, the camera only captures her back.

Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, the film focuses on Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and the conflict between Ravenna and her sister, Freya (Emily Blunt). Following an incident, Freya decided to leave Ravenna and later turned into a cold-hearted ice queen.

At her cold kingdom, Freya trains children, calls them huntsmen and forbids them from loving other people. The latter, of course, did not work, as love eventually grows between her two most talented huntsmen, Eric and Sara (Jessica Chastain), but because of her power the two were later separated.

Years later after the events in Snow White and the Huntsman, Snow White is said to order Eric to find the missing Magic Mirror. Eric learns that Freya wants to have it too and realizes that she will be unstoppable once she owns it. Together with dwarfs Nion (Nick Frost), Gryff (Rob Brydon), Bromwyn (Sheridan Smith) and Doreena (Alexandra Roach), Eric starts his adventure to find the mirror before Freya does.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War features a brighter story than Snow White and the Huntsman. However, the final conflict between Ravenna and Freya feels less attractive as the audience can easily guess the ending. Some elements in this movie also highly resemble The Lord of the Rings and Frozen and those who have not watched the first movie may feel a bit confused with the story, particularly since the Snow White character does not appear.

Nevertheless, the movie is still beautiful to watch, especially thanks to the costumes worn by Theron, which are all gorgeous and appealingly accentuate her appearance. (kes)
