The role has been portrayed by Harrison Ford since 1977.
Ehrenreich, who appeared in Coen Brothers' Hail, Caesar!, was up against other actors, such as Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor, Independent.co.uk reported. But following several screen tests, he reportedly became the primary contender.
Planned for release in May 2018, the spin-off movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and will follow the young Han Solo before he linked up with the rebel alliance. It is said to include an origins story to Chewbacca as well. (kes)
