At the 2017 TED Talk conference in Vancouver, an unscheduled guest appeared over video.

Pope Francis, known for his messages of tolerance and acceptance, urged powerful leaders “to act humbly” in a recorded message broadcast at the conference.

Seated behind a desk and speaking in Italian with English subtitles overlaid, the pope said, “The more powerful you are, the more your actions will have an impact on people, the more responsible you are to act humbly.”

“If you don’t, your power will ruin you and you will ruin the other.”

He continued to speak of inclusion in the 18-minute video filmed in the Vatican City. He then prompted viewers to not allow themselves to become a part of a “culture of waste”, in which not only food and drink were wasted, but people were cast aside by newer automation and other technologies.

“How wonderful would it be if the growth of scientific and technological innovation would come along with more equality and social inclusion,” said the pope.

Other notable figures scheduled to appear at the conference this week include tennis player Serena Williams and entrepreneur Elon Musk. (sul/kes)
