ndonesians are known to become more consumer-orientated in Ramadhan. From communal breaking of fasts to Idul Fitri festivities, the necessities increase significantly and according to Google, this has an impact on Google searches.
Yudistira Adi Nugroho, Google’s industry analyst, says internet users start their search from as early as a week before Ramadhan, “The search for bargains starts a week prior to Ramadhan. The first peak usually happens in the first week and the second peak is in the third week of Ramadhan,” he said as quoted by Kompas.com.
“There is a total 40 percent increase of searches for bargains compared to regular days,” he added.
Here are the five most-searched for bargains in Ramadhan according to Google.
Retail and food items
Searching for retail and food items has become a habit of users, to minimize spending in anticipation of the big Idul Fitri holiday.
Travel tickets
Train and airplane tickets are the most-coveted items and are usually booked out even before Ramadhan starts. The surge in searches happens because people want to avoid the high prices as well as to secure themselves seats for the annual Idul Fitri exodus.
Gadgets and telecommunications
Bargains in internet packages are among the most-searched for on Google, also in anticipation of the coming annual exodus, for people to be able to spend the journey streaming movies on their gadgets. “Young people who have just started earning money also search for bargains in gadgets as they want to have new gadgets before going back to their hometowns for the holiday,” added Yudistira.
E-commerce offers
Idul Fitri for most Indonesians means new clothes and looking for discounts at e-commerce sites has become the norm. “Ride-sharing services also lie in this e-commerce category,” Yudistira said.
Credit cards
Credit card holders are also active searchers for discounts offered by their credit card issuers during Ramadhan, which include breaking of the fast or plane ticket price cuts. (asw)
