Facebook Indonesia has reportedly removed thousands of posts related to the recent Surabaya bombings.
Facebook Indonesia public policy lead Ruben Hattari told kompas.com in Jakarta on Friday that among the removed content were 472 posts reported by Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara.
"[We removed] 472 posts just two days after the Surabaya bombings. But actually there were thousands of radical posts that have been removed [in total]," said Ruben, who hesitated to share more detailed information.
However, he said the move was not only based on reports from the public and government, as the company has a team that monitors content on the platform.

Not all content related to the Surabaya bombings was removed by Facebook Indonesia, said Ruben, as some of it was uploaded by mainstream media organizations, such as videos of the explosions. However, the company said it is striving to safeguard its users from distressing content by implementing a filter feature that will flag sensitive posts.
"There is content that we filter, such as videos of the explosions, which is often broadcast on television. We do not remove it; we only cover it using a filter," said Ruben.
Previously, Rudiantara called on the public to refrain from circulating photos and videos of victims of the bombings, which could cause distress. He also encouraged the public to report inappropriate content on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to prevent content from going viral. (kes)
