A protégé has been discovered to continue the "Top Gun" legacy.
he first new cast member of the "Top Gun" sequel has been announced, with "Whiplash" actor Miles Teller tapped to play the son of Goose, as reported by Variety. As the son of Goose who was Maverick’s co-pilot in the original movie, Miles’ role is also the protégé of Maverick’s.
The film, titled "Top Gun: Maverick", will follow Tom Cruise’s Maverick living in today’s world of drone technology and fifth-generation fighters, and will explore the end of the era of dogfighting.
It was also reported last week that in addition to Teller, Cruise also screen-tested with actors Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult.

The sequel to 1986’s "Top Gun", "Top Gun: Maverick" is set to be directed by Joe Kosinski, known for Disney’s "Tron: Legacy". Jerry Bruckheimer, who also produced the first film, will produce alongside Cruise and Skydance’s David Ellison.
"Top Gun: Maverick" is slated to be released in mid-July. (sul/mut)
