T

he drummer of punk rock band Superman Is Dead, I Gede Ari Astina, known as Jerinx, was vaccinated on Sunday at the Jakarta Police headquarters.

Jerinx, who said he had a history of hepatitis, announced on Instagram that he had decided to get the Sinovac vaccine after consulting with veterinarian and virologist Indro Cahyono.

"After reading the science behind it and discussing it with virologist Dr. Indro, I’ve decided that I will take the Sinovac vaccine tomorrow," he wrote on Instagram.

Jerinx urged people to consult a doctor if they were still not sure about the effect vaccination would have on them.

"Don't worry. Consult a doctor. Look for a vaccine that fits your medical history. If you are not eligible to be vaccinated, the doctor will definitely not recommend it," Jerinx wrote.

"Let's support Indonesia together so that it can quickly get back on its feet again," his Instagram post concluded.

Jerinx had been among the most vocal opponents to prevailing perspectives on COVID-19, claiming that the pandemic was profit-oriented and human-made and that the casualties had been overstated by the government.

The musician said he believed COVID-19 existed from the start but that he had a different understanding of the illness.

“The information on my previous Instagram account, JRXSID, which is still unavailable, is just to balance out the views [on the virus] because this pandemic has so many layers of problems and differing perspectives,” he said.

Jerinx denied on his new Instagram account that he was a vaccine “ambassador” or that he had been paid to support the Sinovac vaccine, an allegation he often threw at others.

Followers of the Balinese musician were divided on the matter, with some saying Jerinx had lost his “idealism” and others supporting his claim that he had never been opposed to vaccination.
