The Jakarta administration is set to turn North Jakarta’s Luar Batang into a maritime-themed tourist destination by demolishing unlicensed buildings, effectively evicting many people from the historic coastal area.
The city will build a spacious plaza that can accommodate as many street vendors as possible as part of the area’s makeover, Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said, adding that construction will start in mid-April.
The city will ask companies to fund the project as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.
Ahok has vowed not to demolish Luar Batang Mosque, which has a permit, but to revamp the area by providing wider access roads. The administration will only dismantle unlicensed structures built near the river and sea, while no historic buildings will be demolished.
