JAKARTA: Senior theater actress Ratna Sarumpaet on Wednesday evening nominated herself for the 2009 presidential election and added she was looking for a political party to back her.
"I'm aware that I need a political party. I believe there is still a clean political party," Ratna, who is famous for her monologue play about slain activist Marsinah called Marsinah Menggugat, told reporters and supporters at the Cemara Gallery in Central Jakarta.
To support her move into politics, the 59-year-old actress has established a mass organization called Akar Indonesia, which will conduct a fund raising program through the selling of "stocks" priced between Rp 1,000 to Rp 5 million.
"The fund raising is also a statement that the people own the country ... that candidates who have no money, like me, can run for president, not only rich candidates," Ratna, who founded Satu Merah Panggung Theater in 1974, said.--JP/A. Junaedi
