Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda installed three new director generals on Monday amid a more challenging situation in the international arena.

Djauhari Oratmangun, who was previously head of chancery at the Indonesian embassy in The Hague, the Netherlands, has been appointed as director general for ASEAN affairs to replace Dian Triansyah Djani, who may move to one of the European countries.

The present director of international treaties and legal affairs on economic and socio-cultural issues, Arief Havas Oegroseno, was promoted to director general for legal affairs and international treaties.

Hamzah Thayeb, Indonesia's current ambassador to Australia, became director general for Asia Pacific and African affairs.

Arief replaces Eddy Pratomo, and Hamzah fills the position left by Primo Alui Joelianto. Both Eddy and Primo may get ambassadorial posts.

In his speech, Hassan said the installment came with a more challenging situation in Asia which has seen the rise of China and India and territorial disputes between several countries.

"Director for Asia Pacific and African affairs will handle some 127 countries and this is not an easy job. Those countries in the Asia region have seen a more intensive integration process and there is a need for every country, including Indonesia, to ensure its own national interest."

Hassan also said the new director general for ASEAN would be faced with the challenge of building an ASEAN community by 2015 as enshrined in its ASEAN Charter, which saw Indonesia become the last member country to ratify the historical document.

Hassan also installed Rachmat Budiman as director for international treaties and legal affairs on political and territorial issues, and Elias Ginting as secretary for the directorate general of information and public diplomacy.
