Your comments on the performance of Indonesia in human rights protection as the international community celebrate the Human Rights Day

The adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the proper protection of the defined rights by governments are of course good reasons to be celebrate.

I only wish the international community could also agree on an Universal Declaration of Human Duties and Responsibilities.

What human rights? Our President just signed the porn law -- an example of limiting and controlling our privacy and self-expression. He has got his priorities wrong. Instead he should concentrate on the very basic needs of Indonesians, the right to basic food, shelter and education. For sure I am not going to vote for him again for President. I will abstain probably.

The most serious human rights abuses happened at a police office in East Java. In the investigation process of a murder case, the police tortured two suspects to make them plead guilty although they were never involved in the killing.

After two years, the police found evidence that the real killer was another suspect, Ryan. This shows us that the police are not only unprofessional, but have has committed human rights abuses of suspects.

In an effort to prevent a similar incident from happening again, the police need to improve their professionalism. Severely punish the police officers who breach the regulation.

The rights of LGBTIQ's (lesbian gay bisexual intersex and question mark) are human rights too. But Indonesia's government seems to forget that.

Government workers take bribes, cars and other items, but they won't help victims of the mudflow in Porong in East Java. This is a problem for Indonesia's protection of human rights.
