ALIKPAPAN, E. Kalimantan: The Balikpapan AIDS Prevention Commission (KPAD) said Tuesday it had identified eight people with HIV/AIDS, including a baby, between January and early this month.
"The baby, who was identified *as HIV positive* in January, was infected by his mother's blood," KPAD spokesman Sugiarto said.
He added four of the new infections occurred in early February.
Two of those four people were infected through unsafe sex, one through injection, while the remaining case is still being investigated.
With the additional eight cases, Sugiarto said the number of people with HIV/AIDS in Balikpapan had reached 282 people.
Balikpapan and Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan province, are exhibiting worrying rises in the number of HIV/AIDS infections.
