ATARAM: A passenger ship berthed at Lembar harbor, West Lombok, burst into flames Saturday but no fatalities have so far been reported.
The ship, Nusa Sejahtera, was undergoing repairs when the fire began. At least 12 of its passenger cabin rooms were destroyed.
West Lombok fire-fighting chief, Lalu Ramdan, said his office sent two fire engines to the scene and extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes.
Lembar port chief, M. Thahrir, said it was suspected the source of the fire was sparks from a welding job.
"The crew members were repairing the upper deck. Sparks from the welding may have fallen into one of the passenger rooms and started the fire," Thahrir said, adding that the fire spread quickly because there were mattresses inside the passenger rooms.
Thahrir said the harbor administrative office would investigate the incident and question the crew members, technicians and captain.
