Letters: Islam vs secularism in Turkey

T

his is a comment on a View Point's article: "Why Obama is talking Turkey" (July 14). European Union (EU) is afraid of Turkey because the majority of Turks are not supporting the secular heritage of Turkey.

The Turkish secularists failed to convince the majority of Turks who live in the villages that secularism is better than sharia law. Most Turks always want Turkey to be Muslim, not secular country. So far, the secular Turkish army effectively but undemocratically blocked the people's aspirations. Now, it seems Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan feels himself strong enough to defy the Turkish army.

I am not sure a really democratic Turkey would ever be so different from the Islamic republic of Iran. Any of them is not fit the EU culture of open society.
