AKARTA: The city’s biggest textile trading area, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, has been a primary target of the recent Ramadan shopping frenzy, with an increase of illegal fees demanded from street vendors.
Each vendor is charged up to Rp 2 million (US$ 222) to operate during the fasting month, amid tough competition for space in the area.
Supriatna, 34, a textile trader on Jl. Raya Tanah Abang-Jatibaru, said there were many more vendors of his kind around during Ramadan.
“On regular days vendors only [set up their stalls] on sidewalks, but during Ramadan they overflow onto the streets,” he said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com on Sunday.
Supriatna said that aside from the rental fee he was also charged a cleaning fee of around Rp 1,000 a day. The amounts were paid to a man who coordinated street vendors, a job traditionally managed by local thugs. — JP
