AKARTA: A deputy attorney general has recommended the Attorney General’s Office punish Bojonegoro Prosecutors’ Office chief Wahyudi for his role in an inmate-swap case.
“This was no accident... there is a possibility these actions were conducted deliberately,” deputy attorney general for internal monitoring Marwan Effendy said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The case surrounded a convict, 55-year-old Kasiem, who had been sentenced to three months and 15 days in prison for graft involving subsidized fertilizer. However, 50-year-old Karni was found in her cell instead, acting as a substitute inmate — allegedly for a fee of Rp 10 million (US$1,110).
Marwan said Wahyudi was negligent in his responsibilities to supervise prisons and inmates. Kasiem’s lawyer, Hasmono, and prison staff Atmari may have also been involved in the swap, Marwan said. — JP
