ENPASAR: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono gave Wayan Patut, a resident of Serangan, Denpasar, the prestigious Kalpataru environmental award in Jakarta on Tuesday as part of events marking World Environment Day.
The honor was given to acknowledge Wayan Patut’s work to preserve and conserve the environment in Serangan.
Wayan has worked with a local fishermen’s cooperative, Karya Segara, to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs by transplantation since 2003.
Denpasar mayoralty spokesperson Ida Bagus Rahoela and City Environmental Agency secretary Nyoman Brandi agreed that Wayan’s award might inspire others to protect the environment.
Another Adiwiyata award was given to students of state elementary school SD 4 in Panjer and state high school SMAN 6 for innovative programs that fostered healthy and green schools. — JP
