AKARTA: The capital recorded its highest number of cases of violence against women in the first quarter of 2011, according to the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan). The commission reported that 395 cases were recorded between January and April this year.
“Jakarta is a place of transit for everybody and this explains the high number of cases,” said Ninik Rahayu, deputy chair-person of Komnas Perempuan, as quoted by kompas.com.
Data from the city government said that in the first quarter of 2011 alone, there were 300 reported cases of violence against women, compared to a total number of 1,200 cases in 2010. — JP
