EDAN: Medan’s ad-hoc court sentenced former Nias regent Binahati Benedictus Baeha to five years’ imprisonment and a Rp 100 million (US$11,700)fine, after being found guilty of embezzling tsunami aid funds in 2006.

Although the punishment is three years lighter than that demanded by prosecutors, Binahati said the verdict was harsh and that he would appeal.

“No evidence proved that I misappropriated the funds. This [trial] was engineered,” he said, furiously.

He complained about the unfairness. “In Jakarta, those who were found to have embezzled up to Rp 19 billion, only got 1.5 years [in prison] while I got five years after being charged with misusing Rp 3.1 billion,” he said.
