Forest experts to meet in Jakarta

J

AKARTA: Forest experts were scheduled to gather in Jakarta on Sept. 27 for an international conference on forest and carbon economics.

Titled “Indonesia’s Forest: future alternative to fulfill necessity on food, wood, energy and REDD+”, the conference will discuss challenges and opportunities pertaining to the usage of natural resources in Indonesia.

Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), business groups, NGOs, ministries and neighboring countries have announced their participating in the conference.

“More people are realizing that we do not use land appropriately in Indonesia. Now the country should have an alternative reference to fulfill its national goals, which are so varied,” CIFOR Director General Frances Seymour said on Monday.

Thirty-nine experts are slated to speak at the conference, including World Bank special envoy for climate change Andrew Steer, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan and Chief of the Presidential Work Unit for Development Monitoring and Control (UKP4) Kuntoro Mangkusubroto.

They would express their opinions on how Indonesia can manage its forest during the transition to low carbon economy.
