AKARTA: The Jakarta Police narcotics directorate revealed Thursday that it was still looking for a Malaysian national who was allegedly involved in the smuggling of massive amount of drugs into the country earlier this month.
“We are still tracking down the suspect, HS, for his alleged involvement in drug smuggling worth Rp 702 billion [US$75.1 million],” said Adj. Sr. Comr. Eko Saputro from the directorate.
The police also summoned several custom officers at Tanjung Priok Port who the police believe were involved with an international drug ring.
“They have been very cooperative during the investigation. We could get information from them,” he said.
The police said that it would probe the customs office to know whether or not any of its officers were involved in the smuggling.
The police raided several areas in North Jakarta earlier this month. They confiscated 351 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 2 kilograms of ephedrine during the raids.
The drugs were reportedly imported from China and were smuggled into Indonesia via Malaysia in boxes of fish food pellets. So far, the police have arrested five men who are allegedly involved in the smuggling. They may face the death penalty if proven guilty, according to Eko.
