AKARTA: An official says that the recently discovered flight-data recorder (FDR) of the crashed Sukhoi airliner is in good condition, unlike the plane’s cockpit-voice recorder (VCR), which appeared to be damaged.
The FDR was discovered by local residents on Wednesday afternoon near Mt. Salak in Bogor, West Java, where the accident took place on May 9, killing 45 people.
Even though the FDR, also known as the “black box”, was buried under the wreckage of the Sukhoi, it was identifiable by its orange color.
The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) chief, Air Vice Marshal Daryatmo, officially handed over the Sukhoi’s FDR to the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta on Thursday morning.
“We can still read the data from the Sukhoi’s VCR even though it was burned. I believe that the FDR is also in a good condition,” KNKT chief Tatang Kurniadi said.
