EMARANG: A joint team from the Central Java-Yogyakarta Customs Office, the Central Java National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and Central Java Police arrested a woman, identified only as RS, 37, for carrying 7.74 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine at the Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang.

The value of the drugs is estimated at Rp 16.11 billion (US$1.6 million). Supraptono, head of the Central Java-Yogyakarta Customs Office, said that the drugs were hidden in secret compartments inside RS’s two bags.

“In the first bag, we found two packages of heroin, while the crystal meth was found in the other bag,” said Supraptono, adding that the drugs were wrapped in aluminum foil to evade the X-ray detector at the airport.

Sr. Comr. John Turman, the head of drugs division at the Central Java
Police, said RS managed to get past airport security in the Philippines and Malaysia. During questioning, RS admitted that she got the heroin in the Philippines, while she obtained the crystal meth in Kuala Lumpur before flying to Semarang.

John said RS would be charged under Article 113 of the 2009 Drugs Law for smuggling more than 5 kilograms of the drugs, adding that the offence carried a maximum penalty of death.
