ANGERANG: Customs officers say they have arrested a Nigerian man for allegedly smuggling 1.2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
Airport customs office chief Oza Olivia Igweh said that the suspect, identified as CR, 31, a resident of Lagos, Nigeria, arrived at the airport on an Emirates flight on Sunday evening.
“Officers became suspicious of the suspect because he looked nervous and sweaty while passing by the customs checkpoint at Terminal II,” Oza told reporters at press conference at her office on Monday.
The suspect allegedly offered a US$4,000 bribe to officers to release him, Oza said.
After an X-ray of CR showed strange objects in his stomach, he was taken to a private hospital in Tangerang City for more tests.
“We just wanted to make sure what the objects were. X-Ray tests at the hospital showed that there were 60 capsules containing 1,118.2 grams of crystal methamphetamine in his stomach,” she said.
The drugs have an estimated street value of Rp 1.2 billion (US$192,902).
Customs officers then gave CR laxatives and spent the next 18 hours collecting the capsules
