span class="caption" style="width: 338px;">JP/Wendra Ajistyatama JAKARTA: Three Minang West Sumatra ethnic and cultural organizations reported director Hanung Bramantyo to the Jakarta Police for complaints relating to his new film Cinta Tapi Beda (Love But Different).

The organizations, the Coordinating Board for Social and Cultural Nature of Minangkabau (BK3AM), Student Family of Minang Jaya (KMM Jaya) and the Association of Youth Minangkabau (IPPMI) accused the film of inciting hatred and public contempt of the Minang ethnic group.

According to attorney Zulhendri Hasan, the lead lawyer of the three organizations, the plot of the film Cinta tapi Beda essentially deviates from the philosophy of “Adat basyandi syarak, syarak bassandi Kitabullah (custom based on sharia, sharia based on the Koran).

“In Cinta Tapi Beda there was a clear message that a Minang person is not just a Muslim. This is, of course, information that is obviously untrue and unacceptable,” Zulhendri said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Monday.

The film, which has shown in cinemas since Dec. 27, 2012, tells a story of a Catholic Minang girl, Diana (Agni Pratistha), who has a romantic relationship with Cahyo (Reza Nangin), a devout Muslim. They then want to get married.
