Luxury hotel brands plan massive expansion in Java and Bali

B

olstered by the country’s strong economic performance and with domestic and in-bound travel growing, luxury brands are planning to expand their activities in Indonesia with the opening of more than 4,000 rooms over the coming years.

Three new brands, namely Worldhotels, Preference and Sofitel, are set to open in major cities across Java and Bali.

Worldhotels Asia Pacific vice president Roland Jegge said that its first new resort hotel, the Worldhotel Balangan, would be opened in Bali in early 2014.

“The hotel offers 76 oceanic view suites with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that maximize breathtaking panoramic views over Jimbaran Bay, Dreamland Beach and the Indian Ocean. We offer a luxury service that is authentic,” Jegge said in Jakarta on Tuesday on the sidelines of the official launch of Worldhotels.

Worldhotel Balangan is Worldhotels’ first branded hotel in the country, while its affiliate properties are already established, with The Breezes Bali, Ayodya Resort Bali, The Sultan Hotel Jakarta and the Bintan Lagoon Resort.

He said that Worldhotels would collaborate with Tauzia Hotel Management, an emerging chain in Indonesia that currently operates Harris Hotel and POP! Hotel, and national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, to better target the market.

“Tauzia will manage our hotels in Indonesia and we will cooperate with Garuda Indonesia to enhance frequent flyer benefits for guests,” he said.

After increasing its number of properties to five this year, it plans to add more than 30 properties to its network in the archipelago over the next 10 years.

Tauzia president director Marc Steinmeyer said that they planned to manage more Worldhotels in Jakarta and Bali because there was a growing appetite for luxury accommodation in these regions.

In addition, Tauzia also plans to introduce a new brand to cater for high-end guests, called Preference.

While the Worldhotel is a classic five-star hotel with a resort concept, Preference is a boutique hotel that places emphasis on Indonesian culture and heritage.

The first Preference hotel will be located in Seminyak and the firm plans to begin operations next year.

“We are also looking to open Preference hotels in some cities in Java like Surakarta, Bandung and Surabaya. There is a possibility we will expand this brand outside Java in the coming years,” he said.

Currently, Tauzia runs 18 hotels in Java, Bali and Sumatra, with an occupancy rate of 70 to 80 percent in each hotel.

Separately, Sofitel Asia Pacific senior vice president Markland Blaiklock said that the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort would mark its debut in Indonesia by offering 415 luxury rooms and suites.

“Indonesia is a key growth market for us and we see immense potential to grow the brand here. We’re currently looking at opportunities to expand our presence further both in Bali and in Jakarta,” Blaiklock told The Jakarta Post recently.

Sofitel is the upmarket brand of the French-based hotel chain Accor.

He said that the hotel was set to begin operations in September in time for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit.

He said that the hotel had been selected as a meeting venue, making it well-placed to capitalize on opportunities in the fast expanding market.
