German tourist shot in Rio favela

Police in Rio de Janeiro say a German tourist was shot and injured during a visit with a friend to one of the city's largest slums.

A police statement said Friday that the 25-year old German was shot twice in the abdomen in the Rocinha favela and was carried by a local to authorities for help.

The friend, also a German, told police that the pair were frightened when they encountered an armed man and tried to flee. One of them was hit by bullets.

Rio's health ministry said the tourist was operated for gunshot wounds, including one to his liver.

The shooting came amid security fears as Rio prepares to host World Youth Day in July, where Catholics hope to see Pope Francis. The city also hosts World Cup games in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.
