red-colored Hughes 300C training helicopter from the Army's aviator training center (Penerbad) crashed on the runway at the Ahmad Yani airport in Semarang, Central Java, at around 8:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
The helicopter was severely damaged but it did not explode. A Penerbad student and an instructor suffered injuries and were taken to nearby Lanumad Hospital. The accident caused no disruption to the airport's commercial flights schedule.
Ahmad Yani Air Force Base's security head, Maj.Tony Safrudin, said that an investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing.
He said the helicopter departed from Ahmad Yani Air Force Base at around 8 a.m., but 30 minutes later it flew back to pick up another student for a training session.
'It was approaching the runway but it suddenly came straight down,' said Tony.
A preliminary report indicated that the helicopter crashed after it lost power when flying at low altitude. A further investigation is underway to get the exact details on the cause of the incident.
Flying, using a training helicopter, is part of compulsory training for a pilot trainee.
Meanwhile, the operational manager of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura III based in Ahmad Yani International Airport, Dijan Kinarjudi, said the air traffic ran as normal despite the incident. (ebf)
